Vaccinations

Why vaccinate?

There are several infectious diseases in Australia that can make your pets extremely ill, and some are potentially fatal. Vaccinations provide protection against these diseases and should be started from when your pet’s are 6-8 weeks old. Most of the diseases covered by vaccinations are viral and may not respond well to treatment, therefore preventing them in the first place is key. The more pets that are vaccinated, the lower the prevalence of the disease will be. By vaccinating your pet, you are also helping other pets as well.

The diseases we vaccinate for in dogs:

~Distemper- a deadly disease that attacks your dogs nervous system that can lead to severe damage and paralysis

~Infectious Hepatitis (Canine Adenovirus)- a disease that affects the liver and subsequently the eyes and the kidneys

~Parvovirus- a deadly and contagious virus causing severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.

~Kennel cough (Bordatella Bronchiseptica and Canine Parainfluenza Virus)-highly contagious virus that causes a harsh cough and can sometimes lead to pneumonia.

The disease we vaccinate for in cats:

~Feline Enteritis- causes an often fatal and highly contagious infection of the gastrointestinal tract

~Feline Rhinotracheitis- a common cause of upper respiratory tract and eye inflammation and infection

~Feline Calicivirus- common respiratory disease affecting primarily the lungs, nasal passages and mouth

Sometimes cats are also vaccinated with “non-core vaccines” but only if certain risk factors are present:

~Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)- this virus attacks your cats immune system, leaving them vulnerable to other infections

~Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)- transmitted through saliva or nasal secretions and can cause fatal blood cancer
